What is DAB+?
More and more people in the Netherlands are embracing DAB+, the digital radio successor to FM in the ether. And that's good news, because DAB+ offers better audio quality and a wider range of radio stations!
Across Europe, FM must eventually make way for Digital Radio. Digital Audio Broadcasting is a European digital radio system that will replace the analogue radio signal (FM) and DAB+ is its improved brother. In the Netherlands we are still in a transition phase. This means that DAB+ is increasingly being integrated into radios, smartphones and cars. Meanwhile, DAB+ is already available in almost every new car.
In Norway they already switched off the last FM masts in 2017, making them the first European country to fully switch to Digital Radio. In the Netherlands, it is still a long way off. The government, like most European countries, has not yet agreed on an end date for FM.
The benefits of DAB+
DAB+ is much less susceptible to interference than FM, the sound is noise-free and clearer.
In time you can receive your radio station in all corners of the country. So no more fiddling with tuning to the right frequency.
Unlike digital radio over the Internet, DAB+'s digital signal is taken from the air free of charge, just like the old FM, without any additional data costs. So DAB+ is completely free.
Digital Radio offers a wider range of radio stations. Via DAB+ you can receive all FM stations as well as popular theme stations, for example.
Digital Radio offers room for more radio stations. The FM band, on the other hand, is completely full.
You don't need to know any frequencies because the search is based on the name of the station.
You can receive extra information, for example about the music you are listening to, but also sports results and traffic reports...
DAB+ is better for the environment. It uses 80% less energy than analogue transmitters.
Is online radio the same as DAB+? Listening to radio via the internet, for example via streaming services or apps on your phone or laptop, is not the same as Digital Radio. This is because there are data costs associated with your internet provider. Moreover, you have less listening certainty through the internet because of the connection. DAB + has a stable signal through the ether and is always free.
